Peace you can't explain DAY 33
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:4-7 ESV
Peace that surpasses all understanding. How can we have this in the midst of a world thrown in chaos and unrest? How can a business owner who has no idea when his business can reopen or the employee who lost her job or the mother who needs to homeschool her children while working full day, have this type of peace?
If I read the Word in its simplest form, with childlike faith, then this passage in Phillippians promises that it is available. To anyone. Anywhere. In any season or any storm. Paul, the author was imprisoned while writing it - not an ideal place to say: Rejoice! And yet from a place of his own lockdown he could speak about a peace that transcends/supasses all understanding.
The key? Prayer. The bold call to speak to God, pour out your heart before Him and mixed with a good dose of thanksgiving to bring our requests before Him. There is however one small step not to be missed before we can pray. Do not be anxious about anything… In my years where I had to deal with deep depression, anxiety was one of my closest companions. It was always close by, ready to suffocate the life out of me. It can pacify and numb even the strongest of men and can keep you in an internal lockdown for days, even years.
As I look back now, free from those horrid years, I recall praying these verses over and over again. And true to the power of the Word, it worked! The more I rejoiced in the Lord and the more I allowed his glorious peace to flood my soul, the more the anxiety fled. Not all at once, but it had to subside.
Today, if you are struggling with anxiety about what tomorrow may bring or even just the fear of contracting the virus, can I encourage you to pray. To come with all your requests and wait on Him. And I know the peace that no one can explain will guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus!
Stay safe and stand strong
