Love is patient DAY 1

Updated: Mar 31

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 So here we are, day ONE of the lockdown. As our lives have been brought to a sudden and merciless stop, we are facing so many emotions, challenges and fears. With two small kids and a pregnant wife, I am bracing for a time where my character will be stretched, my patience be tested and my faith be challenged. Many of you might be facing similar challenges – some with full homes with many children and others being confronted with the loneliness of an empty house. Regardless of your situation, I want to encourage you to stand strong and use this opportunity to grow. Yes, we are fighting an unseen enemy, but we can put our hope in a faithful God. As I am reading through the letter of Paul to the Corinthians, the well-known passage of 1 Corinthians 13 is so applicable today. I will be sharing some thoughts on this and other passages as we embark on this unknown journey. Love is patient… Patience isn’t one of my greatest virtues. It’s not one of those traits where you ask for it and it comes gift-wrapped in a lucky packet at your front door. No, it must be learned through long queues, nagging toddlers and test upon test. In a watch-on- demand, get-it-now and I-want-it-my-way society we are all going to be stretched to show a lot of patience. With our spouses, roommates, children, parents, siblings and even ourselves. But Paul brings encouragement to us all – love IS patient. Godly love, sacrificial love, choosing others above yourself love IS patient. Patient love is persistent love. It means loving one another in a crowded house when we don’t feel like it. It gives the second, third, tenth chance. I know in myself I do not have this type of love, but by God’s grace He enables me by his Holy Spirit to love this way. Yes, it was day ONE and you already lost your patience (maybe more than once) and you are wondering… ‘How on earth am I going to get through this?’. Start by saying sorry where you mess up and ask for grace and forgiveness. We are all going to need a lot of it with one another. And know, you can always turn to the most loving and gracious, the most patient and long-suffering Saviour of all! Stay safe and stand strong. Retief
