Fake or fact? DAY 9
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoiceswith the truth. 7 It always protects, always
trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
We are all currently bombarded by news. It comes via Facebook, Whatsapp, Instragram, a worried phone call from a relative and so many other channels. The challenge is knowing what is fact and what is fiction. Fake news has become the great deceiver of our age and in this lockdown it has never been more apparent. Our children are growing up in a world where what once seemed to be taboo is not just now acceptable, but celebrated and classified as fact and truth. What in many places and on various platforms are celebrated is in fact a fake love that is delighting in evil.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
True love never suppresses evil. It never condones sin. It never covers up wrongs. It exposes it and then leads it to repentance. Truth is not first a concept, but a Person. When asked where He was going and how to get there
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus is the Truth with a capital T. From Him all truth flows and anything in this world holding itself up as truth that is in contradiction to His truth, which is firmly established in the Word, is not truth at all. It is fake news, disguising itself as fact. When I resist His truth I am actually resisting Jesus himself. Therefor we need more than ever to be grounded in the Word of God and lead by His Holy Spirit as John writes two chapters later,
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” John 16:13
We have a saying in our house – The truth will set you free, but first it will tick you off.
When I think back on the most difficult, but life changing moments in my life, it was when someone had the guts to speak the truth to me. Moments where I wanted to run away, not wanting to face the truth of my sin and character. But by His grace I could embrace those moments, repent and walk away a free man. Truth, deep real truth can really save us if we are willing to accept it and let it change us.
Stay safe and stand strong.
